Hop on a train, ocean liner or hot air balloon and explore the unique cultures and artworks across the globe.  Each day, focus on a different area of the world and create artwork inspired by the visual art, music, dance, fashion and history of the places you’ll discover in your journeys.

Animation for Kids 9 AM - 12 PM Ages 5 - 7 $240 members, $265 non-members

This cool camp will guide young artists through the step-by-step process of stop-motion animation. Participants will work with paper materials, digital cameras and computers, while being encouraged to let their young minds explore the imaginative possibilities of animation.

Creating on Canvas 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 6 - 8 $255 members, $280 non-members

Experiment with acrylic and watercolor paints to invent a new color, create dynamic textures and construct realistic and abstract masterpieces! Try different painting surfaces and work together with your classmates on a collaborative artwork.

Learn how to turn ideas into sketches, sketches into drawings and drawings into paintings. Explore drawing materials like charcoal and pastel and use your drawing expertise to successfully compose and execute paintings using watercolor and acrylics.

Explore the wonderful world of Legomation! Using Legos and other snap together building bricks, campers will collaborate to design and build their own stop-motion movies.

Ceramics Intensive 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $310 members, $335 non-members

Work at your own pace to begin your mastery of the ceramics medium. Take the time to explore your subject, strengthen your clay building techniques and practice wheethrowing. Experiment with glaze application and surface design and take home a broad portfolio of ceramic pieces.

Foundations of Digital Photography and Photoshop 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $340 members, $365 non-members

This camp emphasizes examples and exercises designed to develop the ability to see and create successful photographs. Use digital still cameras to learn about exposure, composition and capturing a subject then use the power of Photoshop software to explore a variety of digital imaging techniques. Jump head first into programming with Minecraft! Learn to create your own texture pack and build custom servers, and walk away with an understanding of terminal and a taste for Java.

Author, artist and visionary, Dr. Seuss said, “I like nonsense … fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.” Become inspired by the numerous works of Dr. Seuss and delve into your own imagination to create fantastical art. Learn how to design and create your own movie using the popular technique of claymation. Watch and discuss a variety of clay animations then use cameras, clay and computers to make short clay animations with a soundtrack.

Manipulate metals like copper and pewter to create truly unique wearable artworks. Design, carve, stamp and form decorative pieces through metal working processes like embossing, metal plating, enameling and casting.

This hands-on camp will expose students to the foundations of a variety of popular stop-motion animation styles including hand-drawn, object, and cut paper animation. Digital video cameras and editing software will be used to create finished projects. Examples from essential films will be screened as a lead-in to each topic.

Discover the amazing qualities of clay through exploration! Learn fundamental ceramics techniques like handbuilding and coiling and push the boundaries of the medium to create something brand new and all your own. Experiment with earthen and air dry clay and fire one piece to take home.

Create multiple and unique versions of original artworks using printmaking. Explore relief, screenprinting, monotype and stamping using a variety of surfaces and experiment with printing utilizing untraditional and natural materials.

Sometimes you don’t have to look far to find inspiration! Learn about artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Marcel Duchamp and Julian Shnabel who became famous for using broken, found and everyday objects in their artwork. In this camp, you will upcycle common items into spectacular art of your own through assemblage, painting and sculpture.

Create a unique narrative using watercolor and printmaking techniques to express a story through pictures. At the end of camp, combine your illustrations to form a storybook that is all yours, beginning to end.

Introduction to Video Game Programming 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 8 - 10 $340 members, $365 non-members

This introduction to the creative world of video game programming and design is geared toward 8 - 10 year olds. Students will learn how to make their very own video games using Scratch - developed at the Media Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology - a programming language for creating interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. While learning how to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively, youngsters will also learn how to design, program, and troubleshoot.

Explore the traditional Japanese form of pottery called raku. Use handbuilding and wheelthrowing techniques, surface design and glazing to create unique pieces. Finish the experience with an outdoor firing where your ceramic pieces will be finished using an open flame.

Super Short Documentaries 9 AM - 12 PM Ages 11 - 13 $240 members, $265 non-members

Learn how to use digital video cameras, microphones, and editing software to create unique short documentaries. Interviewing techniques, shooting B-roll, and various documentary styles will all be explored in this camp.

Digital Animation with Wacom Tablets 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $240 members, $265 non-members

This camp offers an introduction to digital illustration using a stylus and graphics tablet. Students will explore various animation methods including character animation and rotoscoping, an animation technique in which animators trace over live-action video. Students can bring their own graphics tablet or borrow one of ours.

Drawing 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $255 members, $280 non-members

Recreate what you see around you by using observational drawing and create your own world with abstract design. Gain experience with gesture and contour while drawing from a clothed model and make marks with materials like charcoal, oil pastel and graphite.

Let your creativity expand beyond the canvas as you and your classmates design a secret hideaway from your imaginations. Work as a team to combine elements such as architecture, painting, sculpture, sound and light to create a one of a kind experience for all that enter!

Design, build, and program robots using CMU CREATELab’s Hummingbird kit and recycled materials. Students will learn how to creatively use Servos, sensors, and LEDs along with programming basics to make their robot creations come to life!

Many film and television special effects sequences incorporate “Green Screen” to create movie magic. Explore an imaginative world of possibilities using this popular technology by creating your own superhero or fantasy character. Enter the world of Pop Art in this dynamic mixed-media camp. Use paints, inks and found objects to create bold, colorful 2D and 3D artworks inspired by famous pop artists like Pittsburgh’s own Andy Warhol.

Learn how to develop movie-worthy artwork in this introduction to creature design. Take a character from concept to completion as you transition from anatomical sketches to a 3D maquette. Use professional materials such as polymer clay and airbrush paint to create a realistic model of your devised creature.

Throughout the week you will learn how to create basic circuits, hone your woodworking skills, and program video games in Scratch. Then combine these skills to create your very own video game controller and marshmallow catapult out of recycled materials.

Week 7: July 21 - July 25

Art Vacation 9 AM - 12 PM Ages 4 - 5 $140 members, $165 non-members

Get ready for an exciting adventure around the world! Stamp your passport as you pass through different countries; exploring their animals, people and cultures. Create original artworks inspired by your experiences and show off your impressive collection of stamps and art to your friends and family.

PGH Puppetry with the Margo Lovelace Project 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 5 - 7 $255 members, $280 non-members

Our city is a rich community of puppet related organizations, performances and artists, including Margo Lovelace, who owned and operated the Lovelace Marionette Theater on Ellsworth Avenue in the 1960’s. In this camp, you’ll be inspired by Lovelace’s legacy and work with several regional artists who specialize in puppet design and performance. Learning from each artist, you will create different types of puppets and theater props that will be integrated into one collaborative performance.

Building the Future 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 6 - 8 $255 members, $280 non-members

It is 2080 and we are moving out into space! A group of architects (our campers) have been sent on a mission to design and build homes of the future… on the moon! You’ll decide how buildings in the future might look different from the structures of today and imagine what new technologies you could use to help construct out-of-this-world architecture. You will create conceptual drawings, models and an entire space station to help you on your journey.

Earth & Fire (week 1 of 2) 9 AM - 12 PM Ages 8 - 10 $310 members, $335 non-members

Learn the basics of working with clay including handbuilding, wheelthrowing, glazing and firing. Create vessels like bowls and cups, realistic sculptures and brand-new abstract creations.

Andy's Factory 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM Ages 8 - 10 $140 members, $165 non-members

Join the assembly line and create some amazing Pop Art masterpieces though drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Learn about what makes art “pop” and how Andy Warhol used the help of his friends to create amazing artwork from images in popular culture.

Learn the basics of black-and-white photography and working in a darkroom. Emphasis will be placed on the principles of composition, proper use of the camera, and processing and printing your own roll of film. Class exercises will enable you to practice your skills and create successful photos. Cameras, film, and photo paper are provided.

Designing Interiors 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $265 members, $290 non-members

Discover the similarities between fine and applied arts in this interdisciplinary camp. Dabble in graphic design; learn how to combine color, pattern and textures to create textiles; and work individually and as a team to execute floor plans and stage an interior of your own.

Find inspiration in your own image and learn the basics of drawing the human face and figure. Use drawing, painting and sculpture to capture the human likeness and explore other, abstract ways to create a portrait.

Be inspired by Modern Art’s great masters like Picasso, Warhol and DuBuffet. Emulate their techniques and styles to create portraits, prints, dynamic geometric designs, stunning abstracts and sculptures.

Learn all about music and technology in this camp. Students will create homemade microphones, play around with simple, temporary circuits made from common materials, and record original sound effects and music. Perfect for music, art, and science fans.

Digital Storytelling with CREATE Lab 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $240 members, $265 non-members

This super cool camp combines old-fashioned storytelling with cutting-edge technology. Work in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab, a community robotics and technology education program. With old family photos and new images created at camp, students will use digital cameras, scanners, microphones, and editing software to create unique digital “photo romans” - a film comprised entirely of still images set to voiceovers, music, and sound effects. In addition, students can add their voices to CREATE Lab’s Hear Me project by recording and editing an audio story. These stories recognize youth as crucial members of, and contributors to, the community and the world.

Become inspired by the innovative fashion designers and fiber artists of today and begin your own fashion portfolio. Utilize tailoring, draping and embellishment to reimagine a standard garment and showcase your work in an end of the week fashion show and presentation.

Step back into a time when knights and princesses were not just characters in fairytales. Learn about heraldry, create your own armor, design a castle and depict fantastic beasts. Use metals and fibers to sculpt and weave and eventually transform yourself into a medieval alter ego.

Soft Sculpture 9 AM - 12 PM Ages 6 - 8 $140 members, $165 non-members

Combine fabric, foam and even natural materials to form unique sculptures. Experiment with different sculpting processes like weaving, sewing and assemblage to produce larger than life every day objects, fantastical creatures and abstract creations.

Explore the arts, science, engineering and simple machines for a true STEAM experience. In this camp, you will upcycle common items into spectacular inventions of your own through assemblage, painting and sculpture. Work in teams on a Rube Goldberg machine to create complicated chain reactions and experiment with uncommon art making materials to achieve unexpected results

Explore the wonderful world of Legomation! Using Legos and other snap- together building bricks, campers will collaborate to design and building their own stop-motion movies.

Raku 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $310 members, $335 non-members

Explore the traditional Japanese form of pottery called raku. Use handbuilding and wheelthrowing techniques, surface design and glazing to create unique pieces. Finish the experience with an outdoor firing where your ceramic pieces will be finished using an open flame.

Due to the drying and firing time needed to complete a ceramic piece, artworks may need to be picked up at a later date.

Cryptozoology, Ancient Aliens & Other Weird Stuff 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $340 members, $365 non-members

UFO’s, Big Foot and Ghosts are just a few of the subjects covered in this camp mixing strange phenomena with moviemaking. Historical and recent examples of famous hoaxes will be screened, analyzed and combined with video making exercises leading to an original “mockumentary” movie production.

Join us for the “Greatest Show on Earth” and play around under the big top. Work with your classmates to create a miniature circus; complete with wire sculptures of acrobats, paper mache animals and colorful painted backdrops. Inspired by sculptor Alexander Calder’s tiny mixed media circus, engineer kinetic performers and even add sound effects to bring your spectacle to life.

Experiment with acrylic and watercolor paints to invent a new color, create dynamic textures and construct realistic and abstract masterpieces! Try different painting surfaces and work together with your classmates on a collaborative artwork.

Transform yourself into a wizard and travel to a magical realm where dragons and other mythical creatures roam. Conduct experiments to create colorful potions and conjure rhythmic spells and incantations. Complete your magical persona by constructing a magical wand, sculpting a companion animal and designing enchanting costumes.

This introduction to the creative world of video game programming and design is geared toward 8 - 10 year olds. Students will learn how to make their very own video games using Scratch - developed at the Media Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology - a programming language for creating interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. While learning how to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively, youngsters will also learn how to design, program, and troubleshoot.

Step into a professional jewelry studio to explore the processes behind beaded, wire and hammered jewelry. Use semi-precious stones, glass beads and copper to produce unique wearable artworks.

Learn a craft that has been around since ancient times. Use techniques such as soldering, foiling, overlay and glazing and look to examples of stained glass throughout history as inspiration for the design of your own stained glass artwork.

Explore the subjects that have been fascinating artists for centuries: landscape, portraiture and still life. Discover the unique perspectives of great painters throughout history and use acrylic and watercolor paints to explore important principles of painting like color mixing, style and focal point.

Launch an investigation to find patterns in nature and architecture and invent some of your very own. Experiment with painting, drawing and sculpting and engage in group activities to explore patterns in movement and sound.

Superheroes 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 5 - 7 $255 members, $280 non-members

Learn about superheroes in books, films and comics and invent your own alter ego complete with a catchy name and special powers. Design your superhero costume, create gadgets and accessories and illustrate your hero’s adventures in your own comic book!

Enter an art laboratory and experiment with different materials to create 2D collages and 3D assemblages. Inspect multiple art genres like Abstract Expressionism and Cubism to inspire invented artworks of your very own.

Use clay, found materials and fabric to create sculptures that hang, stand or sit. Look at what types of objects sculptors are making today and collaborate with your peers to create an installation that transforms your studio classroom.

Design, build, and program robots using CMU CREATELab’s Hummingbird kit and recycled materials. Students will learn how to creatively use Servos, sensors, and LEDs along with programming basics to make their robot creations come to life!

Super Short Movies 9 AM - 12 PM Ages 11 - 13 $240 members, $265 non-members

This hands-on camp will introduce students to the basics of visual language used in movies. Pre-production, cinematography, sound, and editing will be covered. Geared towards aspiring young filmmakers who want to get started creating their own movies.

Sewing Fundamentals 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $310 members, $335 non-members

Become familiar with using a sewing machine and learn the basics of joining fabric. Utilize a number of different stitches, on the machine and by hand, to create both functional and decorative items for you and your home.

Ceramics Intensive 9 AM - 3:30 PM Ages 11 - 13 $310 members, $335 non-members

Work at your own pace to begin your mastery of the ceramics medium. Take the time to explore your subject, strengthen your clay building techniques and practice wheelthrowing. Experiment with glaze application and surface design and take home a broad portfolio of ceramic pieces.

Explore several different traditional animation styles in this cool class. Paper shapes, 3D objects, and even classmates will be animated into unique movie projects using various styles and themes. Digital cameras and Apple software will be used to create finished projects.
